Neonatology

Neonatology

Akkineni Hospital focuses on the specialized care of new borns, especially those who are premature, low birth weight, or critically ill. Our advanced NICU is equipped with life-saving technology and managed by expert neonatologists, providing round-the-clock monitoring, respiratory support, and developmental care. We ensure not only survival but also healthy growth and long-term well-being through early, compassionate and expert intervention.

1. Level IIIA NICU

A Level IIIA Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a highly specialized facility designed to deliver advanced medical care to critically ill or premature new borns, typically those born at 28 weeks of gestation or later. It offers comprehensive support for neonates requiring mechanical ventilation, advanced monitoring, and management of moderate complications, including respiratory distress and low birth weight. While it is equipped for minor surgical interventions and complex neonatal care, it may refer infants needing high-frequency ventilation or major surgery to a higher-level centre. Staffed by expert neonatologists, specialized nurses, and a multidisciplinary team available 24/7, a Level IIIA NICU ensures a safe, closely monitored environment that supports stabilization, recovery, and optimal developmental outcomes during the most vulnerable phase of life.

2. Low weight babies

Low birth weight (LBW) babies—defined as infants weighing less than 2,500 grams (5.5 pounds) at birth—require specialized medical attention due to their increased vulnerability to health complications. These newborns may be born prematurely or full-term but with restricted growth, and often face challenges such as breathing difficulties, temperature regulation, feeding issues, and a higher risk of infections. At Akkineni Hospital, our expert neonatal team offers round-the-clock care in a controlled NICU environment, ensuring precise monitoring, nutritional support and early interventions. Our goal is not only to stabilize these fragile new borns but also to promote their healthy growth, neurodevelopment and long-term well-being through compassionate, evidence-based care.

3. Preterm babies

Preterm babies born before 37 completed weeks of gestation, often require intensive medical care due to their underdeveloped organs and heightened susceptibility to complications such as respiratory distress, feeding difficulties, and infections. These infants may also face long-term risks involving neurodevelopment, vision and hearing. At Akkineni Hospital, our advanced Level IIIA NICU is fully equipped to support preterm new borns with specialized respiratory support, thermal regulation, nutritional therapy and continuous monitoring. Guided by an expert team of neonatologists and neonatal nurses, we deliver individualized care that fosters stability, growth and developmental milestones. Our focus extends beyond survival nurturing each preterm infant toward a healthy and thriving future.

4. Cooling Therapy

At Akkineni Hospital, we offer Cooling Therapy (Therapeutic Hypothermia) as an advanced neonatal intervention for new borns diagnosed with Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE)—a brain injury caused by oxygen deprivation during birth. This therapy involves carefully reducing the baby’s core body temperature to around 33.5°C for 72 hours, helping to slow down brain metabolism, reduce inflammation and limit neurological damage. Conducted in our specialized Level IIIA NICU under expert supervision, cooling therapy significantly improves survival rates and long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes. With state-of-the-art equipment and round-the-clock care, Akkineni Hospital is committed to offering this life-saving therapy to ensure every new born has the best possible start.

5. Kangaroo Care

We actively promote Kangaroo Care, a highly beneficial, evidence-based practice that involves skin-to-skin contact between a new born and a parent, typically the mother. This method is especially valuable for preterm or low birth weight infants, as it helps regulate the baby’s body temperature, heart rate, and breathing while fostering emotional bonding and promoting breastfeeding. By enhancing neurodevelopment, reducing stress and improving weight gain, Kangaroo Care plays a vital role in the infant’s overall recovery and long-term health. Our neonatal team guides and supports parents through this nurturing process, integrating compassionate care with advanced neonatal practices to ensure a stable and supportive start for every new born.

NICU Transport Ambulance

Our NICU Transport Ambulance offers specialized, mobile intensive care for critically ill and preterm neonates requiring urgent transfer. Outfitted with advanced neonatal ventilators, incubators and real-time monitoring systems, the unit ensures uninterrupted life support during transit. Staffed by expert neonatologists and NICU-trained personnel, the service guarantees safe, timely and clinically guided transfers bridging the gap between referring centers and our advanced NICU with precision and care.
